Group Counseling

Group counseling is comprised of a small group of students (typically 4-6) from similar grade levels. Groups are educational in nature, and often run between 6-8 weeks. When planning group topics, some are identified through outcome data to determine suitable candidates, while others are based on teacher nominations. For groups relying on nominations, teachers are informed of the group’s purpose and the specific skills to be introduced and practiced. Teachers are then invited to nominate students who may benefit from additional support in developing these skills. After nominations, parents are contacted to explain the group and extend an invitation for their child to participate.
Group topics have included:
* Divorce / Changing Families
* Academic Success
* Impulse Control
* Friendship Skills
* Social Skills
* Social Thinking
* Stress Management
* Grief and Loss
* Self-Esteem
* Growth Mindset
* Attendance
Groups usually meet near or during lunch time to accommodate different grade level schedules and to reduce students missing academic instruction. Families receive a review of the skills practiced at the conclusion of the group so that reinforcement of the skills can continue at home.
